Buyer's guide
How I'd buy a used GX460 again
I bought my GX460 in October 2025 after about six months of looking. I scrolled past a couple hundred listings, took about 40 seriously and saw a dozen in person. I'm not a mechanic. I'm an owner who did the legwork, and this is what I'd tell a friend.
Know the market
- Prices are all over the place. Stay in the search long enough to see the trends in your area.
- Nearly every one I looked at had more than 100k miles. How it was cared for matters more than the year.
- Facebook Marketplace has GXs from dealers and private sellers alike.
Screen listings fast
- Skip cream interiors. Nine out of ten I saw were dirty or cracking. It's an easy first cut.
- Skip anything around 190k miles and up.
- Watch prices against miles for a few weeks and the overpriced trucks start to stand out.
- Be willing to look a few states away. I was ready to fly out and drive one home.
Run the VIN
- Dealers list the VIN. Private sellers will share it if you ask.
- Dealers usually hand over the Carfax or AutoCheck report for free.
What to look for
- Deferred repairs
- A timing cover leak or a coolant valley leak that was found and not fixed. Walk, or use it to negotiate.
- History that stops partway
- If dealer visits end halfway through its life, it went to other shops after that. You know less.
- A full dealer history
- The best sign there is. Mine was serviced at Lexus its whole life.
Get a PPI, remote if it's far away
- Mine was in another state, so Stevensons Automotive in Media, PA inspected it without me there. He found some surface rust (fine) and a blown radiator (not fine).
- I knew exactly what I was buying before I got on the road.
Negotiate with what you found
- Deferred work and PPI findings are your leverage. Ask for a lower price, or for the fix before the sale.
- Expect a lot of no's. Be ready to walk.
- I negotiated by phone after the PPI, and again when I picked it up.
