Should I change the transmission fluid on a high-mileage GX460 with unknown history?
The short version
- Change it
- With unknown history and 100k+ miles, I'd change it, even if a dealer says to leave it. Do it in stages.
- Drain and fill
- Drain about 4 quarts at the pan, drive 10–15k miles, and repeat 3 or 4 times. Skip the pressure flush.
- Faster route
- A shop can do a full exchange through the cooler return line in one visit. Ask for it by name.
- If it's burnt
- Dark fluid that smells burnt changes the math. Have a shop look before you change anything.
